ISLAMORADA, Fla. — Twenty-six of the world's best anglers descended on the town of Islamorada, Fla., for the Florida Keys Outfitters International Game Fish Association's (IGFA) Inshore World Championship. Internationally known as "Ground Zero" for flats fishing, this little fishing village in the Florida Keys is home to some of the planet's most discriminate bonefish, tarpon, permit, snook and redfish, making it a fitting location for anglers from around the world to test their fishing skills.

Unlike most fishing tournaments where registration is open to anyone, the only way to fish in the IGFA Inshore World Championship is to win a qualifying tournament, making this event one of the most difficult tournaments to enter. There are 20 IGFA sanctioned qualifying tournaments.

"The qualifying tournaments are spread out over four continents and represent 26 states and seven territories," said Mike Myatt, COO of the IGFA in Dania, Fla. "There's a light tackle division and a fly division, and I believe it's about a 50/50 spread on participation in this event. We have anglers here from as far away as Sweden and Trinidad, and three continents represented."

All the fish in the IGFA World Championship and the qualifying tournaments must be released, essentially enforcing the credo of catch and release of inshore gamefish, a policy that is becoming more acceptable among inshore anglers chasing light tackle gamefish. The IGFA has been a staunch proponent of catch and release fishing, both for inshore and offshore gamefish.

"The non-kill tournament that we have here is a conscious effort to promote catch and release, and we've done a good job of it," said Myatt. "We've converted some striped bass tournaments over to catch and release and we've only qualified people from the catch and release divisions."

Of the 23 anglers in the event, 7 are females. Several of the qualifying tournaments are female only, yet several of the women who qualified for the IGFA Inshore World Championship competed against males as well in open-format events. This is the tenth year of the IGFA Inshore World Championship all of which have been held in Islamorada, and a woman has never won a championship event.
The tournament is actually two events in one, with anglers competing in either the Fly Fishing World Championship or Light Tackle World Championship. Up to 20 anglers can qualify for each championship based on the IGFA qualifying events, and will fish with the top area guides in their respective categories. Guides are selected by a blind draw at the Captain's Meeting, and anglers will fish with the same guide for the entire event.

"We've got guides that compete in a lot of tournaments and win a lot of tournaments and they've all got good experience targeting multiple species with different tackle," said Sandy Moret, Owner of Florida Keys Outfitters in Islamorada, which is hosting the event. "I'd be happy to fish with every one of them."

Anglers fish for three days, targeting tarpon, bonefish, permit, snook and redfish, and may only enter three fish of any species each day. The focus is a slam, which is accomplished by catching one of each species, with points awarded each catch based on the species and the tackle. A slam will trump all points, although the point count will determine the winner of two anglers tied in numbers of slams or if no one catches a slam.

"The object is to catch a slam of all five species, which is very difficult to do because each species has its own nuances that make it a challenge to catch," Moret said. "Options make Islamorada such a great place to hold this event. There are very few areas on the planet where you can find these five species within a 30 minute boat ride. Plus we have a lot of educated fish, so they're a lot tougher to catch, which makes it more challenging to the anglers."

Most years, bonefish, tarpon and permit are the toughest fish to catch, but large schools of small bonefish to the north and good concentrations of tarpon on the ocean side of the Keys should make these species easier targets. Last January, a prolonged 10-day cold period brought freezing weather to the tropical area of Florida Bay where the majority of redfish and snook reside, resulting in a major fish kill in the shallows which affected snook in particular.

Estimates from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission suggest that more than 50 percent of the snook population in Florida Bay perished during that 10-day period.

"Snook are definitely going to be the toughest part of the slam this year," said Moret. "I talked to a couple of guides that have them wired, but the rest are sweating it a bit. It's not going to be won until the last day of the event, and everyone will be in it until the end."
With such a wide variety of angling skills and experience, the event is sure to produce some dramatic catches and many firsts for these accomplished anglers. How far they have to travel and how difficult it is to catch all of the species will play into the strategies over the three-day period, but on Thursday evening, Islamorada will crown a new Fly Fishing and Light Tackle Inshore Champion.

Learning how to cast your fly line into the wind will allow you to catch fish when others are blown off the water. When the wind is blowing into your face, don't drive the fly rod tip farther down in an attempt to generate more energy and line speed. If you drive the fly rod tip farther down, all you are doing is widening the fly casting arc. This produces a wider open loop, which the wind will be happy to blow back into your face.

Instead of trying to put more force into the cast, concentrate on getting a tighter loop, which will go through the wind much more easily. Also change the angle of your cast to open the loop inches above the water instead of feet above it so the wind has less time to blow it off target. You can change the angle of your fly cast without changing the casting arc by rotating your arm slightly at the shoulder so that your elbow moves back and up just slightly.
