Today, Thomas and Thomas is a 25-employee company based in Greenfield, Mass., focusing on producing some of the best bamboo and graphite fly rods in the industry.
Thomas & Thomas’ headquarters has moved around a bit over the years, but hand-sculpted bamboo fly rods has been their focus all along.

In 1972, the partners purchased Sewell R. Dunton rods and moved to Turner Falls, Mass., after Len Codella came on as a partner.
The company also bought out Maxwell in 1977 before the company was sold to P.J. Carroll Co. Dorsey and Codella continued to run the company until 1991 – when the company was sold to Lon Deckard of Cincinnati, Ohio.

So how good are Thomas and Thomas bamboo fly rods?

Good enough for a pair of Presidential commissions. In 1981, Thomas and Thomas built a bamboo fly rod that President Reagan gave to Australian Prime Minister Malcom Frazer as a gift.

Max GLX

Also retailing in the mid $600 range, the Max GLX is made with drift boat and raft anglers in mind.
These are great rods for poor conditions, too, allowing the angler to muscle through winds, rain, strong currents, not to mention large patterns.

GL3 Rods
About half the price of the GLX, the GL3s can be had in a dozen different lengths/weights and still offer great quality along with the great value.

ShoreStalker
Priced around $325, the 8-foot ShoreStalker is a shorter specialty rod geared toward river smallmouth and smaller largemouth bass.

GL2 Rods
The GL2s, considered a phase one/entry level rod, retail for just over $200 and are great small-stream/pack rods. I love tiny, two-piece rods like this when I’m flipping small flies in tight corners.
But if you’re hunting for something big, you’ll want to step up and go with the GL3 or GLX.
Other rods worth checking out include the Xperience, East Fork, Fly and NativeRun Quinault.

G.Loomis Fly Reels
G.Loomis also makes some fine reels, including the Eastfork for under $200. All three models are equipped with strong, smooth and, more importantly, sensitive drag systems that are all about performance. They’re also both forged and machined, so they’ll stand up to the elements as well.

The Current Reels are my favorite, double anodized and cold forged, so they look good on top of performing unlike many easy swap reels. The quick-release button spool makes swapping out lines a snap, and is perfect for the lefty anglers in the crowd. The reels retail for between $250-475 with an extra spool running $145-185 depending on the weight.
The Venture is the best value among the G.Loomis reels, running about $100. A spare spool usually runs around $65. These champagne gold/anodized finish reels are available in three sizes: #3, #5 and #7.

New Fly Rods by Orvis
The future is now for the Orvis’ ZG Zero Gravity Helios fly rod series, named “Best of the Best” by Field & Stream magazine the past two years.

The magazine notes that the Helios saw “10-to20-foot distance gains unfurl within a few casts for almost everyone. A 5-weight feels like a 3-weight; a 10-weight feels like an 8-weight. In the end, we were convinced you get what you pay for, and we couldn’t quite say that about some other rods.”

What you pay, however, is the catch. The rod costs $755 (make that $800 if you want it personally engraved). Winter is by far the toughest time of year to fly fish for river trout.
The weather not only makes it tough on the angler, numbing the fingertips and making casting and stripping line nearly impossible, but it’s rough on the fish as well.

Like many species this time of year, the trout’s metabolism comes to a screeching halt, so they’re more sluggish and aren’t as quick to feed as they are in the spring through fall.

Then there are the river conditions, which become more challenging with every passing day, with ice, runoff and debris giving frost-bitten anglers even more obstacles to worry about.
The conditions are tumultuous on the fish as well.
In hopes of keeping these challenges to a minimum this time of year, here are some winter fly fishing tips to help you enjoy more success on the water:

1. Watch the Weather
First of all, never put yourself in harm’s way when going out into the outdoors. Going out in freezing conditions is not only unproductive, it’s unsafe. Always keep an eye on the forecast, especially when heading up to the mountains, and get off the water at the first sign of thunder or snowstorm, which could lead flash flooding or lightning strikes.
Fish aren’t going to bite in these conditions, so it’s no use risking your life.

2. Fish Close to Home
No use driving five hours if you’re only gonna fish for a couple of hours of daylight.
Stay close to home instead, and fish the waters you know better than anyone. Fishing unfamiliar waters in the winter when the conditions are at their worst is just a bad idea. Give yourself the best chance at success by fishing the waters you’re confident on.

3. Fish in the Late Morning, Afternoon
In terms of the time of day to fish, I have a rule that I don’t get out of bed early if it’s below 40 degrees. You might still be able to catch a trout at sunrise in those conditions, but is it really worth it?

Wait until the sun hits the water on those coldest mornings, burning off some of the morning frost and giving the fish a reason to come out for a quick snack.
You’d probably be better served to sleep in, drink a cup of coffee and a nice warm breakfast before you hit the water in these conditions anyway.

4. Fish the Slow Runs
Slow metabolisms means you have to fish slow as well.
The tendency is to fish stretches of water that are in direct sunlight, but you’ll also want to stay away from swift runs and stick to the slower water where bugs and baitfish might be more active. Remember, the longer you can keep your fly in the strike zone, the better your chances are going to be at hooking up.

My favorite approach is to fish riffles that flow into deeper pools, allowing the nymph to tumble over small fall or dropoff and naturally sink to the trout’s wheelhouse.
If you don’t make it easy on the trout, they’re going to make it tough on you.

5. Get Down Low
Now that you know when and where to fish, be sure your fly is getting in front of the trout’s snout.
Using beadhead nymphs or splitshots will help you bounce your fly off the bottom and get it where it needs to be. If you’re not against using a splitshot, start with a size 6 about 8 inches above the fly and see if you need to go lighter or heavier on ensuing casts.
You could also use a streamer like a wooly bugger or muddler minnow and fish it like a nymph as well. I’ve caught some of my largest browns on a woolly bugger using this approach.
If you feel like you’re getting hits, rather than bouncing on the bottom, but aren’t hooking up, you can always try a strike indicator.
I’m not a big fan of strike indicators, but if you’re not a fan of or skilled at high stick nymphing, an indicator is probably the best bet. It’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to strikes in the winter.

Colorado fly fishing is some of the best in the nation. But in a state with more than 8,000 miles of fishable streams and rivers – and 2,000 lakes – anglers can face tough decisions on what region to visit and what waters to fish.

Grand County, located 67 miles west of Denver, makes the decision easier, boasting more fishable water than any other county in Colorado. Its extensive water network includes Colorado’s largest natural lake, 1,000 miles of streams, 1,000 acres of high-mountain lakes and 11,000 acres of reservoirs.

Waters
Colorado River – Several stretches of the river bear the official designations of “Gold Medal Streams” and “Wild Trout Waters,” with large brown and rainbow trout. In particular, the stretch of river where the Colorado is joined by the Fraser (west of the town of Granby), downstream to Troublesome Creek (five miles from the town of Kremmling), is designated Gold Medal fishing, insuring use of artificial flies and lures only. Fishermen/women must return all trout to the water immediately.

Colorado River headwaters – In Rocky Mountain National Park, with its western entrance in Grand County, are secluded alpine lakes and streams that form the headwaters of the Colorado River.
Muddy Creek – The newer, constantly improving tailwater below Wolford Mountain Reservoir boasts rainbows of up to five pounds taken in the tailwater pool, and up to 16 inches downstream.
Fraser River – This tributary of the Colorado River holds wild rainbows, browns and cutthroats several miles above its confluence with the Colorado, and in several larger streams that feed into the Fraser. The river begins on Berthoud Pass and flows north through the towns of Winter Park, Fraser, and Tabernash.

Williams Fork Reservoir – Holds northern pike, kokanee salmon, mackinaw, and brown, cut-bow and rainbow trout.

Wolford Mountain Reservoir – A favorite local spot, the 66,000-acre reservoir offers kokanee, splake, rainbow and brown trout.

Lakes of the Arapaho National Recreation Area – Lake Granby, Monarch Lake, Shadow Mountain Reservoir, Meadow Creek Reservoir, and Willow Creek Reservoir, along with neighboring Grand Lake – the largest natural body of water in Colorado – feature outstanding fishing for rainbow, mackinaw, brown, cutthroat, and brook trout, and kokanee salmon.

Lakes of Rocky Mountain National Park – About a third of the park’s 147 lakes – not stocked – have fish.

We’ve been big fans of the last-generation Sage 3000 series reels for years. Our loaner gear gets worked really hard, and in particular we’ve always said that “South Andros is where reels go to die”. At Andros South, our old 3000 series reels have held up incredibly well. Through hundreds of angler days, constant exposure to saltwater and salty air, and a maintenance program that could be described as ‘moderate’, we’ve literally never had a problem with our 3000 series reels. That’s saying a lot. Really – reels break here. Last year Sage released their replacement for the 3000 Series – they’re now called the 6000 Series. To be honest, we were really worried that they were messing with a good thing. After a season of use with the 6080- the reel in the series best suited for bonefishing, we can report real good things. Sage has managed to make a few improvements to the reels, but most importantly, they didn’t fix what wasn’t broken.

Here are 3 things to like about the 6000 series.
1. They didn’t change the bombproof drag. They’ve maintained the drag from the 3000 series. It’s smooth, it’s strong, and we haven’t been able to break one yet. Simple as that.

2. They’re really light. Saltwater rods are getting lighter and lighter, and a heavy reel can really screw up the balance of these rods. These reels balance well with light saltwater rods, and a week of fishing on the flats is one situation where we think light is good.

3. It’s easy to change the retrieve. One improvement made in the 6000 series is the easy ability to swap the retrieve, without tools. Unscrew the drag housing, pop out the clutch bearing, flip it around, put it back in, screw the drag housing back on. Easy-breezy!
